NASA membuat sebuah misi simulasi yang disebut Mars Dune Alpha.

Mars Dune Alpha ini merupakan habitat seluas 160 meter persegi yang terletak terisolasi di Johnson Space Center.

Misi simulasi ini dirancang sebagai uji coba menantang untuk menghadapi semua rintangan dan kesulitan selama berada di planet Mars.

Habitat yang dirancang oleh firma arsitektur BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, akan menampung anggota kru saat mereka menangani berbagai tugas dan masalah: melakukan penelitian ilmiah, memperbaiki hal-hal yang tidak berfungsi, dan mengelola sumber daya stasiun yang terbatas.
