Mimpi untuk menanam tanaman di Bulan selangkah lagi menjadi kenyataan. Ilmuwan menanamkan bibit thale cress di tanah Bulan atau regolith yang dibawa pulang oleh tiga misi Apollo. Thale cress, atau Arabidopsis thaliana, adalah tanaman berbunga kecil yang masih berhubungan dengan brokoli, kembang kol, dan kale.

Meski bisa bertahan hidup di tanah Bulan, tanaman ini tidak bisa tumbuh dengan baik. Cress yang ditanam di tanah Bulan tumbuh lebih lambat dibandingkan dengan cress yang ditanam di abu vulkanik. Selain itu, tanaman ini juga menumbuhkan akar kerdil dan menunjukkan tanda stres.

Ini merupakan eksperimen pertama yang menginvestigasi apakah tanaman bisa tumbuh di tanah Bulan. Karena tanah ini sangat berharga dan langka, NASA hanya meminjamkan 12 gram saja, setara dengan beberapa sendok teh, kepada ilmuwan untuk melakukan eksperimen.

Untuk melakukan eksperimen ini, ilmuwan menanam benih thale cress di tanah Bulan yang dibawa pulang oleh misi Apollo 11, 12, dan 17. Ilmuwan juga menanam benih yang sama di campuran abu vulkanik dan mineral yang meniru tanah di Bulan dan Mars.Β Ketika diteliti beberapa hari kemudian, ilmuwan terkejut karena melihat semua bibitnya telah berkecambah. Tapi tidak semua bibit tumbuh secara optimal.

Secara keseluruhan, bibit yang ditanam di tanah Bulan bernasib lebih buruk ketimbang bibit yang ditanam di abu vulkanik. Alasannya, tanah Bulan miskin nutrisi, kaya akan partikel besi, dan dipenuhi pecahan kaca dari meteorit, sehingga sulit menjadi medium tumbuh.
