Diketahui akses internet di negara-negara Afrika disebut paling mahal sedunia. The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) mengungkap rata-rata warga di Afrika menghabiskan 7,12 persen dari pendapatan mereka untuk menikmati akses internet hingga 1 GB.

Dilansir dari CNN Indonesia, internet mahal di Afrika akibat pasar yang lesu dan monopoli. A4AI merekomendasikan liberalisasi pasar dan langkah untuk meningkatkan daya saing. Menurut laporan itu, perpindahan dari pasar monopoli ke pasar multioperator bisa mengurangi biaya.
